The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) has broken into the top 20 of a global ranking of universities under 50 years old, the first Australia university to do so.

Times Higher Education ranked UTS 15th in its list of the world's top 200 young universities, released at the Young Universities Summit in Brisbane on Thursday.

지난 목요일, 브리스번에서 열린 신흥 명문대 총장 회담에서 발표된 Times Higher Education(THE)의 세계 상위 200개 신흥 명문대 순위에서도 UTS 대학교는 15위에 올랐다.

Phil Baty, Times Higher Education's rankings editor, said UTS's strong performance was owed to improved scores for its research environment and the influence of its research.

"Australia's great strength in depth and claim of high positions in the table will serve it well in the table in the years to come." Australia was one of the leading nations in the list of best young universities under 50, claiming 23 of the top 200 places.

Australia also performed strongly in a new global ranking of universities that were established in the 20 years after World War II, a "golden age" of rapid university expansion as countries turned their attention to solving domestic problems.

호주 대학교는 2차 세계 대전 종전 20년 후에 세계 각국이 국내 문제를 해결하기 위해 대학 확장을 지원하던 "황금기"에 설립된 세계 대학 순위에서도 뛰어난 성적을 올리고 있다.

Times Higher Education said that the Australian National University (second), Monash University (fourth) and UNSW (seventh) were all in the top 10 of this "golden age" ranking of universities formed between 1945 and 1966.

THE 에 따르면 1945년에서 1966년 사이 "황금기"에 설립된 대학들의 순위에서 호주 국립대학교 (2위), 모나시 대학교 (4위) 그리고 UNSW 대학교 (7위)가 상위 10위 권에 이름을 올렸다.

No other country had three or more universities in this ranking.

다른 어떤 나라도 3개 이상의 대학교를 이 순위에 올리지 못했다.

Aside from UTS, many other young Australian universities improved their standing in the ranking for institutions under 50 years old.

UTS 이외에도 다른 신흥 호주 대학들이 개교 50년 미만 신흥명문대 순위에서 더 향상되었다.

The Queensland University of Technology rose to 24th from 28th last year. The University of Wollongong moved to 30th from 37th, the University of South Australia moved to 32nd from 57th, and Griffith University moved to 35th from 48th.

퀸슬랜드 공과대학교 (QUT)는 작년 28위에서 24위로 뛰어 올랐다. 울릉공 대학교도 37위에서 30위로 상향되었으면 남호주 대학교도 57위에서 32위로, 그리피스 대학교도 48위에서 35위로 상향되었다.

"A key strength for Australia in this ranking is that it has representatives that were founded in every decade between the 1960s and 1990s," Mr Baty said.

UTS vice-chancellor Attila Brungs said it was the third consecutive year his university had been first in Australia in this ranking.

UTS 대학교의 아틸라 브렁스 총장은 UTS 대학교가 3년 연속으로 이 순위에서 호주 1위를 차지하고 있다고 말했다

"What we are doing is working. It's not a blip," he said.

All five universities which were former institutes of technology – UTS, RMIT, Curtin University, the University of SA and the Queensland Institute of Technology – are in the top 100 of the young university rankings.

이전에는 기술 대학이었던 5개 대학 - UTS, RMIT, 커틴, 남호주 그리고 퀸슬랜드 공과대, 모두 현재는 세계 신흥명문대학교 100위에 안에 올라있다.

Renee Hindmarsh, executive director of the Australian Technology Network (ATN) which represents these five institutions, said the ATN universities had linkages with industry which resulted in graduates having real-world skills and experience.
